Be the Difference Foundation Hosts Third Annual Wheel to Survive San Francisco
An Indoor Cycling Fundraiser to Benefit Ovarian Cancer Research
REDWOOD CITY, CA. – Be the Difference Foundation announces its third annual Wheel to Survive San Francisco fundraiser to take place on Sunday, November 1, 2015 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Bay Club Redwood Shores in Redwood City, CA.
Wheel to Survive is an uplifting and inspirational indoor cycling event to benefit ovarian cancer research. Cyclists can form a team or ride as an individual for the full four hours. Each rider raises at least $250 to participate. 100% of money raised by riders benefits ovarian cancer research.
Dr. Laura Shawver, Chief Executive Officer of Cleave Biosciences, Founder of The Clearity Foundation and 9 year ovarian cancer survivor, is one of these riders at Wheel to Survive San Francisco.
“As a cancer researcher, never did I think I would become a cancer patient,” said Dr. Shawver. “What I learned is that while there have been great advances made in certain types of cancers, women battling ovarian cancer have benefitted little.”
With no effective, routine early detection test available for ovarian cancer today, the statistics are staggering. 22,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year. Almost half of women fighting ovarian cancer will lose their battle within five years of diagnosis.
Seeing the need for a new and innovative way to look at ovarian cancer, Dr. Shawver founded The Clearity Foundation, a non-profit organization which helps ovarian cancer patients and their physicians make better-informed treatment decisions based on the molecular profiling of tumors. Since 2008, The Clearity Foundation has helped more than 500 ovarian cancer patients obtain their own “tumor blueprint”.
The Clearity Foundation is one of the four research programs funded by Be the Difference Foundation through dollars raised at Wheel to Survive events in Dallas, Austin and San Francisco. Since 2013, more than 200 Bay Area riders have raised over $180,000 at Wheel to Survive San Francisco.
“Through Wheel to Survive, Be the Difference Foundation has been instrumental in helping The Clearity Foundation empower women to take charge of their ovarian cancer diagnosis and make better informed decisions about their treatment,” said Dr. Shawver. “Together, we are making a real difference in the fight against ovarian cancer.”

Be the Difference Foundation was formed by four ovarian cancer survivors in different phases of survivorship who all shared the same passion, to “be the difference” in the fight to end ovarian cancer. The Foundation’s mission is to help women increase their chance of survival of ovarian cancer by raising awareness and money to fund programs for women fighting ovarian cancer today and to provide research dollars for a cure.
