Be the Difference Foundation and Frisco RoughRiders Strike-Out Ovarian Cancer
Frisco RoughRiders Host Ovarian Cancer Awareness Night at Dr Pepper Ballpark
FRISCO, Texas – September 6, 2015 – Be the Difference Foundation, the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition and the Frisco RoughRiders are kicking off September, National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, with a special Ovarian Cancer Awareness Night sponsored by Medical City Dallas Hospital at Dr Pepper Ballpark on September 6, 2015 at 6:05 p.m.
“Ovarian cancer has the ability to devastate families,” said Jessica English, Frisco RoughRiders Sr. Group Sales Executive. “It only makes sense that we support the awareness and research of this cause.”
Ovarian cancer accounts for about 3% of cancers in women, but it causes more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system. Less than 50% of women diagnosed with ovarian cancer will survive five years after diagnosis. This year alone, more than 14,000 women will die of disease in the United States.
“The numbers are shocking,” said Julie Shrell, ovarian cancer survivor and President of Be the Difference Foundation. “These women are our mothers, sisters, wives, daughters and friends, and they deserve better.”
Unfortunately, there is no routine, reliable early detection test available for ovarian cancer today. Symptoms such as bloating, pelvic pressure or abdominal pain, feeling full quickly while eating and frequent urination are often overlooked. Most women are not diagnosed until late stages, at which point the prognosis is usually poor.
“Researchers continue to search for a way to diagnose ovarian cancer early, but until then, awareness can save lives,” said Shrell. “Our goal is for every fan, player and official to leave the game with a greater knowledge of this disease and its symptoms,”
Both the home and visiting teams will wear teal sweatbands during the game, survivors will participate in pregame ceremonies including first pitch and mid-inning entertainment will focus on raising awareness of the deadly disease.
Ovarian cancer survivors will receive a free ticket to the game if they RSVP to Rachel Albin at ralbin@bethedifferencefoundation.org before Friday, September 4, 2015. All other attendees can purchase tickets here.
