Why I Ride: Colin Mansfield
One woman is diagnosed with ovarian cancer every 24 minutes. 22,000 women this year. One woman dies from ovarian cancer every 37 minutes. 15,000 women this year. Sadly, 70% of women diagnosed with ovarian cancer will die from the disease. There is no reliable early detection test available for ovarian cancer. These women are our mothers, daughters, sisters and friends and they deserve better. We all deserve better.
On February 26, 2017, I will be participating in Wheel to Survive, an inspirational six hour indoor cycling event to raise money to help women batting ovarian cancer today and to provide research dollars for a cure. 100% of the money I raise will go to fund these programs. This event raises money for Ovarian Cancer with the aim of promoting early detection, promoting innovative and alternative treatments, and finding a cure. As a summary of what happens at the event, it involves teams of individuals riding spin cycles in a fixed location in North Dallas. Each rider can ride for an hour or for up to six hours (you get breaks) and each team may have 6-15 individuals riding at any one time.
As in past years, the Wheel to Survive event is being promoted by Be The Difference Foundation, a non-profit organization with the goal of helping women who have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer and contributing to studies and pioneers in the field to help make women aware of the early warning signs and to fund efforts to find a cure. In 2015, Be the Difference Foundation raised over $500,000 overall in funds to help find a cure and promote early detection, and at this point they have raised over $2,000,000 to help find a cure for this terrible disease. This year at Wheel To Survive Dallas 2017, I ride in memory of my mom, Kathy Mansfield, who lost her courageous battle with ovarian cancer on October 29th, 2014. My mom had a real passion to help this organization fight for a cure for ovarian cancer, and to help eliminate ovarian cancer completely. She also had a major passion for wanting to truly make a difference in the lives of others, and now I have the opportunity to carry out her legacy. My mom was able to be with my dad, me, my sister, and her family longer because of the funds raised by this organization.
This year, I am asking you to participate in my mom’s, Kathy Manfield’s, honor and memory and to carry on her legacy.
